DART+ West second public consultation begins, detailing capacity and electrification plans for Maynooth/M3 Parkway lines

Communities along the route of DART+ West are invited to give their feedback on the Preferred Option

Iarnród Éireann has today commenced the second round of public consultation (PC2) on DART+ West, which will see the electrified DART network extended from Connolly/Spencer Dock area to west of Maynooth and to M3 Parkway.

Funded by the National Transport Authority, under Project Ireland 2040, DART+ West will provide a greatly enhanced and more sustainable transport option for communities in Maynooth, Leixlip, Clonsilla, Coolmine, Castleknock, Navan Road, Ashtown, Broombridge and Drumcondra on the Maynooth line, as well as Hansfield, Dunboyne and M3 Parkway on the M3 Parkway line.   This will be achieved through infrastructure works resulting in higher frequencies and electrification, and new trains, to increase passenger capacity by more than 160% on the route.

This current phase of public consultation follows on from previous public engagement which took place in autumn 2020. The project team has analysed and used the feedback received to inform the current design of the DART+ West Preferred Option. Feedback on the Preferred Option is now invited during this period of public consultation.

Differences to the design being presented during this public consultation

New communities to be served by DART+ West will include Pelletstown (station opening Autumn 2021), and Phibsborough/Glasnevin, which will see a new interchange station to be delivered by the MetroLink project.  As well as more frequent and higher capacity, communities will also benefit from reduced emissions from electrification of the route.

The planned infrastructure improvements include:

 Current Project Status

The second phase of public consultation on this project is now live. It is designed to present the preferred option for provision of DART+ West to communities and stakeholders along the route.

All are encouraged to review the full details at www.dartplus.ie, which also features an interactive virtual room. Details of a dedicated phone line, email address and online feedback form are all available at dartplus.ie. Due to the current public health restrictions, in-person consultation is currently not permitted. A series of webinars for communities along the route will commence next week.

Upon completion of this consultation, all submissions will be carefully considered by the project design team and these will be used to inform the subsequent design development.

Once this design work is complete, a Railway order will be submitted to An Bord Pleanála in late 2021 or early 2022. A statutory consultation period will take place after lodging of the application and it is expected that An Bord Pleanála will hold an oral hearing on the application, which will be open to all members of the public.

Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann Jim Meade said: “It is great to see the DART+ programme progressing, DART+ West will be the first route to be delivered. We listened to feedback from the first round of consultations and we believe that the Preferred Option presented in this phase of public consultation has succeeded in addressing the concerns that were raised by communities along the route and will ultimately make the project even better for those that it will serve. I would encourage everyone to have their say, by participating in the public consultation process. This is your railway that we are future proofing for generations to come.”
